CREATIVITY, A.I. & TECHNOLOGY ©By Patrick Moraz

Creativity, used in the broadest sense of the term, is the exultation of the spirit affirming its freedom to produce new value.

We should however differentiate the "poetry" of the creation from the "prose" of the fabrication. These two "mechanisms" (of the creation and the fabrication) are therefore a dialectical antithesis.

The source of all acts of creativity and its initial impulse is spontaneity. The act of creation happens in the state of dynamic tension between the opposing forces of FREEDOM and CONTROL.

The creative intuition has to integrate the intelligence and the know-how of the fabrication (i.e. elaboration/organization, in the etymological sense of the term), as well as the generative instinct in the lively unity of the imagination, whose perfection is associated to genius.

In all creative fields, the "supreme" moment is the moment of inspiration and invention or these magical moments when a divine power takes hold of the creator. At these instants everything seems to come together at the same time: spontaneity, intuition, biological or organic receiving of a guiding theme based on an original idea (provoked or not by an emotional state), the utilization of opposing forces as well as the ability to choose freely the moment of unity between the invention of the theme and its realization.

From a more universal and general point of view, based on the principle that communication is the foundation of life, exchange its process, balance its key, harmony its beauty, agreement its power, creativity then becomes its free expression.

“The Epitome of Creativity lies in the State of dynamic tension between extreme forces in opposition":

Man & Machine!

The freer of restraints the spirit will be, the more open he will be to creative impulses and the more he will be able to "decide" instantly how to channel, and even manipulate the messages in progress. That's how he can PLAY with the creative processes that set in motion the opposing forces of the spirit, namely the critical mind and the emotion of the soul.

It is worth noting at this point that the true emotion of the soul is not programmable or will most definitely be the last parameter to be programmed by a super computer of future generations! (The future, fortunately, still holds many surprises in store for us!) Creativity, especially in the field of instantaneous composition, represents also the immediate "recollection" of future events from which the name "Future Memories", almost untranslatable in French if not by "Mémoires du Futur" (in its entirety or as part of the whole).

The Idea, in its primary state, thus becomes the material of choice for the creative spirit, and the instrument or tool serves as a means to transcend its realization.

Therefore, the technologies of today become an integral part of the basic creativity, and are closely related to the realization processes, on the intuitive as much as the productive level, representing the ulterior organization phase of a basic idea (original).

Before venturing further into this article, it is necessary to insist on the fact that the creative spirit, individually or as part of a collective whole, should be honored with trust and the freedom to make his creative choices.

There will always be plenty of restraints due to given social conditions or certain demands related to the society we live in, or definite technical situations that could influence the creation of a work.

The cultural, artistic and technological milieu in which we evolve, the historical environment in the broad sense of the word, are also factors that determine the "kinship" and common context of creations, the geographical as well as the chronological situation (space/time continuum).

Where there is joy, there is creation! (not to be confused with "happiness" and regardless of the fact that certain creative spirits find the motivation for their creativity in stress and pressures of all kinds).

The elements of freedom, play, spontaneity, chance and intuition are of fundamental importance in the creative process. With the exception of instruments/ basic tools: piano, brush, violin, pencil, tambourine, chisel, etc., all the instruments and tools of today and tomorrow have one common denominator: the computer and its progressive contribution in the field of artificial intelligence.

In all disciplines: arts, sports, finances, etc., it is imperative that the creator (in the human sense of the term) has at his/her disposal systems that give him/her access to efficient and precise information and references that can quickly be used and assimilated. These manipulation processes allow operation at an incredible speed and in this way do not block or slow down the "creative circuits". This lecture will be illustrated with examples from the "3rd Modular Symphony "composed especially for an event such as this one. We will hear the complete version during the evening's recording of the performance. Other "instant variations" will be composed and performed during the same evening.  (©by Patrick Moraz July 2017 all rights reserved)
